Brown Bats In Mass
The bat species most commonly found in Massachusetts homes are the big brown bat. Brown bats are one of the most common bat species. They can be found almost anywhere; in cities, suburbia and woodlands. Little brown and big brown bats will roost in trees, caves, sewers, under bridges and inside buildings.
Bats in The House
The problem with this species is that they are especially fond of taking up residence in our homes. Once the colony moves in they usually stay for good until a proper bat exclusion is performed to force them out.
Note: If you get a bat inside your house, it does mean that a colony of bats are living inside your attic or walls. Bats do not fly inside your house at night unless they are already living inside the upper roof area. Brown bats only go out at night to feed on flying insects and they are not looking for flying insects to eat in your bedroom. If one is seen inside your living area, it got lost going in, or, out of your house.
Note: 6/10/2023 Calls from Massachusetts customers with bats in the house have increased this year. The warm weather may have helped the population.

Bat Houses - Will they use them?
Bat houses generally don't work. This is because there location is the most important determining factor if bats will use the bat house. If its to low they won't use it. If its on a tree and there are raccoons around , they won't use it. If its painted black and its mounted in direct sunlight, it'll be to hot and they won't use it. The bat house temperature has to be right and the bats have to feel safe for them to use it.

Little brown bats have a wingspan up to 9
inches.
They have dark brown fur above and lighter
fur below.
Their droppings are hazardous to breath
and are called bat guano.
Big brown bat bodies measure about 5
inches long.
Big brown bats can live up to 11 years.
Brown bats catch insects in their wings.
Colonies can have as few as 12 to 500 plus
bats.
They have been known to fly over 40 miles
per hour.
Brown bats usually have 2 offspring a year.
They do not live up to their reputation for controlling mosquitoes.
Big brown bats prefer to eat larger flying insects like moths and beetles
